CBAI AIxBiosecurity Research Fellowship Program

The Cambridge Boston Alignment Initiative AIxBiosecurity Research Fellowship is a fully-funded, research program hosted in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The fall 2026 cohort will run from October 13 to December 18. Applications will open later this month.

It is designed to support talented researchers aiming to advance their careers at the intersection of AI and biosecurity, covering dangerous capability evaluations, safety standards, safeguards, and unlearning for bio-relevant models, threat modeling for AI-enabled biological risk, biosurveillance and pathogen detection, DNA synthesis screening, and governance of compute, model access, and dual-use publication. Fellows work closely with established mentors and in-house research managers, participate in weekly workshops and speaker events, and gain research experience and networking opportunities within the AI safety and biosecurity communities at institutions like SecureBio, Harvard, MIT, the Nucleic Acid Observatory, IBBIS, and leading AI safety organizations.

The fellowship runs alongside the CBAI AI Safety Research Fellowship Program for a combined cohort of 40 fellows in Harvard Square.

What We Offer

Fall 2026 Mentors

Who Should Apply?

We welcome applications from anyone deeply committed to reducing AI-enabled biological risk and advancing the responsible governance of AI in the life sciences.

Projects in this fellowship vary widely in what they ask of applicants: some call for substantial biology or biosecurity experience, others for AI safety research experience, some for a mix of both, and others require no substantive prior experience at all. We encourage you to look at the mentor and project listings on the fellowship website to find projects that match your background.

Ideal candidates include:

  • Undergraduate, Master's, and PhD students — and Postdocs — looking to explore or deepen their engagement in AIxBio research, from either an AI or a life sciences background.

  • Recent graduates aiming to transition into technical or governance work at the intersection of AI and biosecurity.

  • Industry researchers, life scientists, and biosecurity professionals with more experience, who we expect to join us as Senior Fellows.

  • Individuals passionate about addressing the biological risks associated with advanced AI systems.

Eligibility: We accept OPT & CPT if you are an international student in the US. But we are unable to sponsor visas for this program.

Referral: If you refer a successful fellow to us, you can get a $500 bounty for each referral who joins us. Please send your referral through this link.

Note: Participants must be 18 years or older to apply for this fellowship.
